Position Description: Head Of Underwriting Insight About the Group Underwriting Insights team: The Group Underwriting Insights team run the Group CUO office and collaborate with key stakeholders to help deliver the business plan loss ratio and drive the Group underwriting strategic priorities. They are responsible for driving greater rigour, analysis and insight around the Group Hiscox underwriting portfolio to help inform the strategy going forward, working very closely with the Group Underwriting Risk & Reinsurance teams and the Business Units underwriting management teams. About the Head of Underwriting Insight role Reporting directly to the Group CUO, you will be responsible for leading the Group CUO office. You will play a key role in operationalising the Group underwriting strategy and ensuring the proper infrastructures is in place to achieve these. This involves supporting the Group CUO on their responsibilities, including their underwriting meetings, internal and external papers and communications. You will also be responsible for leading and supporting on key strategic Group underwriting priorities, which can range from underwriting portfolio management, to risk and reinsurance, to governance and to underwriting talent. You will have two direct reports to support, and you will also work closely with the business unit CUOs and other Group functions to ensure the delivery of these. In addition you will lead on underwriting insight, by staying up to date with the market, and using third party data to challenge our underwriting strategy going forward. We want to work with an energetic and driven person with a genuine interest in underwriting insight. Someone who rolls up their sleeves and gets things done, comes up with ideas and solutions rather than problems and can collaborate with people of all levels during their work. You’ll be working at a strategic level closely with senior members of the underwriting, claims, reserving, finance and other stakeholders. You’ll be combining recurring / regular analysis, deep dive reviews with ad-hoc projects. This will include provision of independent analysis and research, as well as team work with other Group functions and business units. What you’ll be doing: Run Group CUO Office: delivery, reporting and meeting rigour and rhythm ­Support Group CUO Underwriting on annual priorities: drive plan, delivery, track and ensure progress ­Orchestrate GUR & Other Group CUO Underwriting Meetings: clarity, organise, outputs etc Support with delivery of Group CUO papers: CUOs, Boards, Analyst, Partners, GEC etc Group underwriting communications with other Group functions and BUs including timetable Wider Group communications on Group underwriting priorities Lead and support on key strategic Group underwriting priorities: heavy lifting on Group underwriting initiatives ­Deliver Group underwriting active portfolio management to achieve the business plan loss ratio, by challenging the business unit underwriting performance using the MI to track and measure success of actions ­Lead the Group loss ratio business planning process to ensure delivery of annual plan ­Lead on the Group large loss process to understand the Group’s exposure and loss to a market event, with potential disclosure required to the market. Project manage this process from the initial assessment of exposure to gross and net calculations to be signed off on. ­Lead on other Group underwriting initiatives by being the key point person with a clear roadmap and delivery of projects, ranging from systemic risk exposure to underwriting training ­Support on other Group Underwriting Initiatives such as the analyst presentation, underwriting governance (incl Technical Underwriting Reviews) and sustainable underwriting ­Support on BU CUO objectives – align with BU CUOs and help with anything critical in nature upon Group or BU CUO request Lead on Underwriting Insight ­Stay up to date with market trends and provide insight to challenge underwriting strategy ­Support on use of external data to challenge internal underwriting assumptions and improve underwriting performance, such as claims inflation ­Work closely with investor relations and broader Group teams, and utilise existing relationships, reports and third party insight Be an effective and inclusive people manager ­Manage team of two Senior Underwriting Insight Analysts ­Make time for meaningful two-way conversations with their team with constructive feedback to support their team’s development and recognise work done well. ­Invested in the personal growth of their team by helping them identify development objectives that enable personal and professional success.
