BAe Systems have a requirement for Manufacturing Process Development Engineers to work on the below contract. The Airframe Technology Delivery team within Advanced Projects and Technology are charged with identifying, developing and maturing technologies which will provide product performance, cost and leadtime advantage to BAE Systems both for current and future platforms, working with technology suppliers, Research and Development organisations and universities to deliver this goal. We have a number of facilities within the Air footprint where this work is performed including the Factory of the Future in 25 Hangar at our Warton site, the Special Engineered Composites Facility at our Samlesbury site and the Additive Manufacturing Centre, also at Samlesbury. In addition, through our partnerships with Research and Technology organisations, we undertake work with the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) in Sheffield, the North West AMRC situated on the Samlesbury Enterprise Zone, the Manufacturing Technology Centre in Coventry, the National Composites Centre in Bristol and The Welding Institute in Cambridge and Sheffield. From a Manufacturing perspective our activities encompass: • Automated assembly including robot and cobot application • Digital manufacturing (for example the use of augmentation technologies such as AR/ MR, application of the Industrial Internet of Things and the use of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning) • Automation of coatings application • Advanced Materials development • Future Composites processes such as automated layup, 3D pre-forms and dry fibre/ resin infusion • Advanced Metallic processes such as Additive, Powder Metallurgy Hot Isostatic Pressing and Friction Stir Welding. A number of Manufacturing Engineering opportunities currently exist across all areas of the team to work on delivery of new technologies in support of future and existing programmes. Main Responsibilities As a Senior Manufacturing Engineer within Airframe Technology Delivery your responsibilities will include: • Researching new manufacturing technologies for application to airframe manufacture • Working with Product Engineering teams to identify manufacturing and materials technologies solutions for aircraft production • Generating programmes of work to develop and apply these technologies to our environment and new platforms. • Working hands on and with internal organisations/ suppliers/ partners to conduct development programmes to mature technologies • Assisting in managing programmes of work to ensure that cost and schedule are controlled and that the output of the programme meets the desired outcome. • Creation of reports, to a high standard, to document outputs of development programmes including what has been achieved, how this was done and requirements for future work. This will include preparation of reports for consumption by external customers. • Identifying benefits from a cost/ schedule/ product performance perspective, determining how to capture these and reporting on them. • Development of business cases to justify the application/ deployment of technologies • Where appropriate, identifying how technologies being developed can be applied onto existing platforms and working with aircraft delivery programme teams to deliver that application • Potentially supervising the work of less senior engineers within the team including, but not limited to, apprentices and graduates Skills and Qualifications Essential • Degree, HND or recognised apprenticeship with appropriate experience in an applicable subject area (Mechanical/ Manufacturing/ Aeronautical/ Materials Engineering) • A strong interest in the application of technology to manufacturing activities • An understanding of modern CAD/ CAM/ PLM toolsets and a willingness to investigate and learn future toolsets • An excellent grasp of manufacturing engineering principles • Understanding of modern manufacturing processes and their applications • Ability to define, plan and manage manufacturing development programmes to deliver desired outcome in line with agreed schedule and cost • An ability to articulate the benefits of technology • Good analytical and problem solving skills. • Ability to work cooperatively and constructively with stakeholders and team members to deliver successful programmes of work • Ability to prioritise and resolve competing demands for time. • Good written and verbal communications skills including ability to clearly and succinctly explain and summarise complex engineering concepts.
