Location: Central London / remote Salary: £23.97 - £30.69 per hour Job type: 6 Month contract Hours: Full time Job description: Our client, one of the UK’s leading educational institutions are looking for a Head of Research Support & Development Executive. You will be responsible for the line management of a small team of Research Support Officers and ensuring that the universities research grant applications to external research funders have been developed in line with relevant university and funder requirements, assessing successful applications against terms offered and setting up awards in their financial systems. The key to success of this role will be the ability to forge close and proactive working relationships across the RIS teams, and with universities academics, departmental staff, as well as external collaborators and funders. The post holder joins at an exciting time in the development of services for a wider range of innovation activity, with the expectation that this portfolio will expand and evolve. Duties & responsibilities: • Delivering a high quality, specialist support and advisory service for the costing and pricing of research and innovation activities, as well as governance and compliance considerations. •To develop an extensive and detailed knowledge of the universities research and innovation portfolio, and to have excellent knowledge of the HE funding landscape, as well as specialist pre-award research management knowledge and experience. •Line managing a small team of Research Support Officers, planning and monitoring workloads to deploy resources appropriately in terms of volume and complexity. •Supporting and ensuring the effective training of new full-time staff to enable them to meet their responsibilities to a high degree and in line with agreed service standards. •Carrying out the appraisal, ongoing training, relevant support, and the career development for all their direct reports. •Working collaboratively with colleagues in RIS, and other Professional Services and research support functions to support new ways of working so as to ensure the success of the expanded RIS service offering. • Ensuring that all research and innovation proposals and costings targeting external funding are correctly entered on the Worktribe Research Management system and relevant funder portals, including factors such as status, governance, compliance, and relevant risks. • Ensuring that all required acceptance forms/agreements for new awards are signed and returned to research and innovation funders in a timely manner, and that accurate financial schedules are available to support associated contracting. • Ensuring that new awards and project award codes are notified to academics and departmental staff within agreed service standards. • Reviewing new funder terms and conditions, keeping up to date with changes to existing funder terms and conditions, and pro-actively assisting with the dissemination of relevant information to the appropriate sections within RIS and academic departments. • In conjunction with the Assistant Director - Research Support & Development, ensuring that appropriate internal and external guidance is prepared and communicated to stakeholders and team members. • Providing expert advice and support to team members dealing with complex and/or non-standard funder terms (e.g. costing, governance, compliance, VAT requirements, income classification) across both proposals and awards. • In conjunction with the Assistant Director - Research Support and Development, to develop accurate reporting tools to evaluate volumes and complexity of projects within the portfolio, to inform prioritisation, resource allocation and service improvements. Person specification: Detailed knowledge and understanding of the Full Economic Costing (fEC) methodology and its application and context in the Higher Education sector. Extensive experience of the administration and management research and innovation grant applications and or awards in a research-intensive higher education environment Detailed knowledge and experience of external funder electronic grant application portals, research/innovation management IT solutions and/or costing software. Sound understanding of HESA classification, relevant HE accounting and reporting frameworks and VAT in context of research and innovation projects in the Higher Education sector. Demonstrable experience of managing and developing a team, with the ability to devise and implement effective solutions in a high volume and deadline-driven environment. Strong analytical skills, including the ability to analyse, interpret and respond to detailed written documentation. Ability to work independently, managing and prioritising own workload and ensuring via this activity you remain a full and effective team member. Ability to lead a team, prioritise and deploy resources and take pragmatic decisions where appropriate.
